BARCELONA SPAIN

Once you arrive in Barcelona, it is not long before you encounter that prominent exclamation point! … well deserved! … Within Barcelona, the culture found prominent, … appears to be based upon knowing how to live life! … meaningfully! … without judgement! … to the fullest!… This culture is genius, … as the twenty-four hour day is evenly organized in a manner in which to take full advantage of the time allowed in each and every given moment of that day, in relation to some form of positively, socially gathering.

This is a culture that must be experienced at least ‘one short duration’ within one’s lifetime! … while also taking some time to appreciate the prominent, breathtaking, inclusive, meaningful works of Gaudi, the beach, meeting the beautiful people, and last, but certainly … not least! … the wine, and tapas! … to be found socially immersed within the center of this lovely culture… fantastic!

Yes, within the heart of Barcelona, is the Catalonian culture as well as where the great works of Antoni Gaudi … find you, … respectfully. When you go to view the Sagrada De Familia, be sure to purchase the headset, and spend some quality unhurried time there, or you will surely miss it! The historical and architectural aspect of it, as well as the awesome spiritual marvel, stemming from the heart of the artist in reference to a clear defining of respect.

Not only is there something within the art of Gaudi for everyone to appreciate, there is something for everyone to enjoy and appreciate in all of Barcelona! Amidst this adorable city of Barcelona, we are going to slice out a corner of her to enjoy this short stay, knowing that the city will continue to wait on our next arrival, in which we will look forward to learning and enjoying more of her.

A Few Days in Barcelona

Upon entering Barcelona, you are soon pleasantly surprised to realize that there are actually two cultures, quite simultaneously existing there. The Spanish culture as well as the amazing Catalonian language, and culture as well.

I have a three day outlook that offers you the option to periodically modify your stay as you wish, especially in relation to whether you want your trip to be more leisure, or more fully packed with activities, in which to house even more beautiful memories to reflect on forever!  In relation to family fun, and excitement, … you need only to head out to the ‘Tibidado Amusement Park’, https://www.tibidado.cat,  as well as the ‘Magic Fountainof Montjuic  https://www.barcelona.cat, and of course last, but certainly not least, … the beach!

Suggestion

I strongly urge that you organize your lodging, to be primarily, in the ‘La Rambla area’, in relation to convenience, as, … well, … there’s just so much to do, and see in, and around this popular area of Barcelona. La Ramblas, is one of the major places within the city of Barcelona where a lot of the action is. Yes, there are tourists, many of them, and you may find this diversity … to be an ‘attraction’ as well.

Be mindful to place a lot of attention to your walking shoe, as this is where you want to splurge. I strongly suggest that these shoes be durable, and extremely comfortable!

Possible Essentials

Voltage – The voltage in Barcelona, is 220 volts with the 2 pin plug sockets. Though certainly, no worries, as you have the flexibility to pick up this needed appliance at a number of the many stores there in Barcelona.

ATM’s – There are many ATMs in Barcelona, and I found it interesting that they are as comfortable to work with as if you were in your home country. The currency comes out already converted for you into Euros!

                                                  Let’s                            Get Started

OVERVIEW

Yes, the currency is indeed the ‘Euro’, … and interestingly, … one should be mindful that the actual time that you plan to travel can make a difference. For instance, in the winter, it is not very cold, and there are also fewer tourists, thus little concern in relation to lines. Spring, and autumn also have fewer travelers, with similar cooler weather, though, fortunately, a bit less expensive.

I suggest purchasing your ‘Hola Barcelona Travel Card’ https://www.holabarcelona.com, at the outset of your trip. I also urge you to consider taking your, … ‘Barcelona in a Day Tour’,  https://www.barcelonaday.tours. Com, at the beginning of your trip, which includes much of what you are interested in, while having access to the Hop On Off Tour, https://www.hoponhopoffbarcelona.org, to offer you even more perspective of how you might want to modify your itinerary.

Fortunately, you have many options, upon the wide, exciting street of (La Ramblas), … of just so much to do, and explore, along with the constant beautiful view of the nearby ocean, … beckoning some well-deserved quality time with you.

    A Little About Culture

As the culture in Barcelona appears to rests upon a cushion of inclusion, … with the day, … ‘morning’ starting at around eight o’clock, … siesta being between two or three o’clock, with dinner being a little after nine o’clock, – 11:00, and usually enjoyed quite comfortably, over wine, and tapas, as well as immersed deep, among the pleasant, happy, and fun company, of family and friends.

Interestingly, it is not uncommon to find that many locals believe that the ‘sparkling wine’, ‘CAVA,’ to be considered Barcelona’s most popular drink, and not so much, the invariably assumed, Sangria.  Well, … questioning in relation to Cava or Sangria, being the most popular drink of Barcelona, can certainly prove to be a nice ‘ice breaker’, in relation to opening a conversation, or even, … better yet, … sparking, pleasant debate.

Certainly, it is not uncommon to find the afternoons, as well as evenings, centered around these wines, and tapas at one of the many restaurants that you have easy access to, within the vicinity of the lively street of La Ramblas!

                                          Welcome To

L a  R a m b la s !

This wide stretch of a street, is one of the major attractions within the city of Barcelona, of which many tourists have set-up, on their itinerary to especially spend quality time. This is also where you find the beach, as well as … again, yes, the tourists, there are indeed, many of them. I mean, … it is a large, thick crowd, more or less, … depending on your date of travel, … but it is a comfortable crowd, … not rude.

Of course, … where there’s tourists, … higher prices follow. The prices are a little higher in La Ramblas, but you save in the phenomenal convenience, as many of the sites, and things that you are eager to do, are well within comfortable reach, … thus no need to take a taxi, nor wait on one. A walk along La Ramblas itself is quite pleasant with much to see, … especially if your walk extends into a delightful stroll onto the nearby awaiting beach. Yes, … that ocean view that you have invariably noticed from only a short distance from the doorstep of your accommodations, is indeed yours.

Your stay near or on the street of La Ramblas, offers you easy access to popular restaurants, offering great tapas, accompanied with great wine, just waiting on your arrival. If you happen to enjoy the wine a bit much, and simply want to take a nap, there is no need to even think about taking a taxi, as you are just a short minutes’ walk from your lodging.

‘The Mercado’s one of the most popular places in Barcelona, and this huge ‘famous market’ happens to be in your neighborhood. Try and get there early as, … everyone tries to get a seat at the bar!

So, … in the vicinity of La Ramblas, you have ‘attractions’, great ‘wine, and tapas’, a huge market, as well as the lovely ‘beach’ … and all are comfortably within reach.

Mercado De La Boqueria      + 34  934  13  2303        http://www.boqueria.barcelona

This is, without question, one of the most popular markets in all of Barcelona, as it is huge, and located directly in the center of the city of Barcelona, (La Rambla, 91, 08001 Barcelona, Spain). Be mindful that it closes at 8:30 pm. You simply must spend some time here.

Well, … La Boqueria means (fried eggs with ‘baby squid’). This is a meal that is found here within the popular ‘Mercado de La Boqueria’. This market is indeed considered famous, and soon after you enter, … you are consumed with the reasons why.

Following are three of the most popular bars found within this wonderful ‘space’ in the world. Let’s start with, …

Bar Ramblero de La Boqueria, located at: Placa Sant Josep, 16, 08001 Barcelona, Spain, https:/www.restaurantguru.com … is indeed a Mediterranean restaurant, and closes at 8 :30. The best place to find a seat, is indeed, … at the bar, that is, if you are lucky, because this is a busy place that is full of energy, and accompanied with excellent seafood. If you enjoy drinks, and a bit of people watching, then try to go early in order to grab a seat at the bar. This is especially a great place for a late lunch, as well … Enjoy!

El Quim de La Boqueria

+ 34  933 01 9810            https://www.restaurantguru.com

Is the place where, …  wine,  … Tapas, … and seafood dishes are found, … located in Marcado de La Boqueria, La Rambla, 91, 08001 Barcelona, Spain.

Bar Pinotxo      + 34  933 17 17 31   https://www.pinotxobar.com

‘Tapas’, … of course, and things get started at 7:am., in this location … Mercado De La Boqueria, 465 470, 08001 Barcelona, Spain.

Note: I suggest you try and frequent at least these three bars within the Mercado, … at some point during your time in Barcelona.

                                   Some Solo travelers Might Enjoy

The ‘Alternative Creative Youth Hostel’ offers a great Kitchenette, or a stay at the  ‘Hostel Central’. The Hostel Central, is only a few minutes’ walk, down the street, and around the corner from La Ramblas, and near ‘Plaça de Catalunya’, Barcelona.

This hostel was around 29 euros a night, at the time that I was there, and offered spectacular views from the large window. Though be mindful that this is a ‘Hostel’, you are not renting the room, but simply a bed among other beds within one room for the night, so you will have roommates, that are simply other travelers like yourself. I mean, for many ‘back-pack’, solo travelers, the point of travel is to be out, and about, not necessarily spending a great deal of time within your accommodations. I had a great stay here, in an ‘all female’ room, and the experience was comparable to a slumber party, as we were of diverse backgrounds, of different countries. Comfortably in our ‘bunk beds’, we laughed, and conversed about the differences, and similarities of our countries throughout the wee hours of the night. I am sure that I must have fallen asleep, amid conversation.

Locotorious/Computers

There is easy access to computers as well on this popular street, though be mindful that computer access is much more costly in La Ramblas, than in other areas of the city.

Note: Now that you know where to relax, and grab a bite of exactly what you crave, only minutes from your lodging, Let’s take a look at a few of the many tours that Barcelona has to offer.

HOP ON HOP OFF

The ‘HOP ON HOP OFF’, bus tour, is a pleasing way to spend all the three days of your stay. This tour bus … located in La Ramblas, allows you to conveniently enjoy viewing sites from a distance, as well as enjoy the mobility of the tour as you drive past, and around major attractions, and restaurants. I mean, … just hop off, and have a wine, and tapes, … then, … hop back on … still buzzed.

I remember being on this ‘Hop on Hop Off’ bus tour, and the conductor yelling, “next stop is for the museum that holds a few ‘Picassos’”. I immediately awoke from a stupor, when I heard ‘Picasso’, and managed to get down the aisle before the bus took off, as I just had to see the Picassos! I was unaware that there were Picassos in Barcelona. So yes, it is possible to be pleasantly surprised on this tour bus, as well as within all … of Barcelona!

It is now time, … that we spend a moment with the phenomenal artists of Barcelona, … Antoni Gaudi! … ‘I have only slightly spoken about three of his marvels, in the following writing’.

   Sagrada de Familia

At the Sagrada de Familia, the view from the outside reveals the marvel, and genius of the artist. Soon after you purchase the headset, and get it attached comfortably, … you are then pleasantly escorted deep within the heart of the artist. Yes, … especially, Antoni Gaudi’s, …  manner in which he places the word ‘respect’. I mean, … Gaudi, made sure that his spectacular monuments were never placed higher than those of the natural surrounding mountains, as they should respectfully take the ‘highest honor’ of reference. Yes indeed, the headset is more than worth the cost, as your costs of admission goes toward its continuous building. From the outside of the ’Sagrada De Familia’, you might find yourself leaning back, just trying to take it all in, … to see a marvel of architecture, … unlike any other.

So once you turn on the headset, … relax, and just see where the artist pulled his ideas, and thus remained steadfast, … in relation to some of the detailed decisions that were taken toward the creation, and completion of this awesome, … breathtaking masterpiece!

Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is the ‘Old City’… and is also referred to as well as known as the ‘Barri Gotic’ area. This is certainly a must visit, as your walk out, and about the narrow medieval streets, is quite interesting. It’s nice having the option to casually ‘Bar-Hop’, at so many of the bars found in this very interesting neighborhood, unlike any other.

The name, Gothic Quarter, emerged in direct relation to its ‘Gothic’ architecture. This is certainly the area that you might want to make a night of it, as the evenings are focused on hanging out, and about the cocktail lounges, as well as dance clubs, and many unique dive bars.

The ‘ParK Guell

When you head out to Park Guell, be mindful of that, …  Antoni Gaudi, his father, and his niece, moved to Park Guell in 1906. Park Guell is actually a huge garden. You might want to consider carving out at least an hour for this excursion, and a packed lunch is a great idea as well.

                                                 Family
Fun & Excitement!

The Magic fountain of Montjuic – can be found at the location of: Pl. de Carles Buigas, 1, 08038 Barcelona Spain. This is simply, … a show that you do not want to miss, … ‘ Such awesome synchronized beauty!,’ Fortunately, there is no need to seek out tickets as no tickets are needed. It’s free!

Tibidado Amusement Park – The ‘SkyWalk’, offers fantastic views! This amusement park is located in: Placa del Tibidado, 3, 4, 08035 Barcelona Spain.

The Beach

Okay, … Let’s head out to the beach as it’s only a short, sight-full stroll away. This pleasant walk will carry us past many tourists, and restaurants housed with those fine wines, and tapas. It is like going out of your front door to immediately be placed in the center of what’s happening. Yes, … it is time to take a short skip, and a jump, to that awaiting oceanfront. Now you are on this beach full of people, mostly tourists, and certainly many locals.

On this beach, you are able to witness a freedom that some of the women on this beach express here in Barcelona, as it is simply breathtaking. I mean, there was a large circle of women hitting a volleyball to one another, each taking their turn, and only a few of them were wearing a top.

Hop off! … at the Sagrada de Familia. Purchase the audio headset, and just relax, and spend some pleasant time here, outside as well as inside, ‘looking up’, as you will be glad that you did.

A Little History

During the war, in relation to the building of the Sagrada De Familia, … construction ceased, for quite some time, as there was no money to continue. Many years later, monies surfaced, and found their way again toward its completion. The Construction of the Sagrada De Familia started in 1882, and upon the death of the artist, Antoni Gaudi had previously left plans of the manner of which the structure is to be completed.

I bought my ticket immediately upon my arrival to the structure, and had no problems in relation to wait time, getting tickets or going inside, though it is possible to buy tickets ahead of time.

Upon your arrival to view this massive structure, you will find people sitting, standing, lying down, eating, and pretty much just being ‘present’. Interestingly, it is possible to find yourself comfortably doing much of the same, especially after strapping on the headset. It is not long before you clearly understand why you sense the urge to sit down like the others, just anywhere, as you allow the audio to mysteriously, … draw you in, … towards the center of the heart, … of this amazing artist, … Antoni Gaudi!

Take the Hop On Off Bus or a taxi to the ‘Barcelona Bunkers del Carmel’, for a spectacular sunset view of the all of the city. It is wise to take a nice snack with you, and some drinks.

                                                    Dinner

Dinner – At La Boqueria, Tapas, and drinks, … try to arrive early, in order to get the seating of your choice, as many have the same idea as you, … for the evening.

Crime

Unfortunately, ‘petty crime’ does continue to exist in Barcelona, as well as most of the world, so keep your wallets, purses, passport, and money all within your front pockets. I strongly suggest wearing the undergarment ‘body wrap money pouch’, for keeping your valuables, and passport secure, and out of sight, under your blouse/shirt, while keeping a small amount of your currency in your front pockets. This excellent durable, and convenient money pouch fits around the body somewhat like a garment, and only needs to be washed when needed.

I was walking out of the subway one day to find in front of me, lying on the platform, a Japanese man’s wallet full of his credit cards, though no currency. A ‘pick pocketer’ must have easily taken this man’s wallet from his back pocket. They must have quickly taken the money from it, and simply thrown it to the subway floor, all hidden, within the midst of a fast moving crowd  headed for the exit, without him even being aware. I took the wallet to the ‘Lost and Found’.

Unfortunately, I had an experience with this petty crime within the first hour upon my arrival to Barcelona, as I was, of course alone, exhausted, and sleepy, and just wanted to quickly secure accommodations. After securing my accommodations, via reflection, I realized that the markings of my actual taxi cab was different from the markings of the taxi cabs that I noticed when I was later out, and about in the city. Thus my taxicab driver was not a formal taxicab driver of Barcelona. I soon realized that I had indeed paid a little more than four times my actual fare, but, … I was pleased that … that was the worst of the crime, and that all was safe, and well, … otherwise.

                                      PHARMACY INTEREST

Medicines – I have a slight bit of anxiety, so before my return trip to the states, I went to see the local pharmacy to see if they could give me something to calm me a bit in relation to flying. She informed me that I would need a prescription for medicines, though she had an over the counter sleep aid that works great for her. This sleep aid is, ‘Dormidinas’. This sleep aid just makes you groggy enough to be comfortable, … relaxed to fly. This sleep aid worked perfectly!. Unfortunately, upon my return to the States, I realized that I am unable to find this sleep aid in the US.

CORONAVIRUS       TRAVEL             UPDATE  (Note : Subject to Change)

Currently, in relation to traveling to Barcelona, … Spain has dropped all COVID – 19 entry requirements for anyone arriving from the EU or Schengen area. Everyone else must show proof of full vaccination, recovery from COVID – 19, a negative antigen test result (taken in the 24 hours before departure) or a negative PCR test (taken in the 72 hours before departure).
